UACT/CIRA Information/Action Forum

March 18, 2018
6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Unitarian-Universalist Church, 328 Paddock Ave., Meriden CT 06450

Please join the Connecticut Immigrant Rights Alliance (CIRA), Connecticut Students 4 a Dream (C4D), and United Action Connecticut (UACT) to discuss proposals in the Connecticut General Assembly (CGA) to limit Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, and equalize access to higher education for undocumented students. We need the community to take action to advance advocacy that will advance the rights of immigrants and people of color in our state!

An updated TRUST Act will prohibit state and local law enforcement, Judicial Marshals, and Department of Corrections (DOC) from facilitating ICE access to our community members, unless ICE can present a proper warrant signed by a federal judge. It will also address ICE database access, reporting requirements, and other protections that aim to further push ICE out of Connecticut.

Another policy priority seeks to sever a segment of the incarceration-to-deportation pipeline, which funnels many of our friends, family, and neighbors directly from state custody into immigration detention for removal.

House Bill 5031: AN ACT EQUALIZING ACCESS TO STUDENT-GENERATED FINANCIAL AID, would enable undocumented students to access a pool of need-based funds taken from their own tuition money. Connecticut institutions of higher education currently prohibit undocumented students from this financial assistance. We cannot allow systematic prejudice to continue.

Learn more about these proposals to advance justice in our state, and how YOU can help change Connecticut systems to protect Connecticut residents. We need the power of the people to move policymakers to support our communities. We need justice for all people in Connecticut NOW!

For more information, contact:

Alok (CIRA), 860-324-0086
Camila (C4D), 203-482-7340
Mark (UACT) 203-494-8526
